Experiencing a Dedicated Photography Studio for the First Time

As a Kent and London dance photographer, I’ve spent years creating mobile studio setups in all kinds of spaces, from dance studios and community halls to family homes. While this approach has given me flexibility and resilience, I’ve always been curious about working in a dedicated photography studio environment.

Ballet dancer in a white tutu performs an elegant arabesque on pointe against a plain, light gray background, exuding grace and poise.

Recently, the opportunity finally arose, and I booked a session at Lux Studios in Maidstone, Kent. From the moment I stepped inside, I was struck by the spaciousness and calm atmosphere. It felt professional yet welcoming; the perfect setting for a full day of dance photography with some great local ballet dancers.

Although the studio came equipped with a range of lighting and modifiers, I brought along my own trusty lights and gear. I’m glad I did as having familiar equipment gave me both confidence and creative flexibility during the shoot.

One of the studio’s best features was a separate changing room, giving dancers a private space to switch outfits between shots. There was also a comfortable area for parents to sit and relax, complete with a sofa and air conditioning.

This experience has been a game changer. While I’ve become skilled at adapting to different on-location environments, working in a professional studio made me realise how much I enjoy the controlled, stress-free setting it provides. It’s definitely a direction I’m excited to explore further in my career.

Here are a few images from the shoot; a glimpse of what’s possible when dancers, lighting, and space come together!
