When I think about the reasons why someone should have a dance photoshoot, there are the obvious answers, such as:

  • Portfolio images to enhance applications

  • Documenting a dancer’s journey in training and beyond

  • Experimenting with creative ideas

But have you thought about how much a photoshoot can empower, build confidence and offer the chance to be really creative?

The eureka moment

As a photographer, the most impactful moments occur when the trust in each other and the process results in something that surprises us. For the dancer, it sets off a spark of confidence in themselves and enables them to relax, or even push a little

further knowing that they are in a safe space.

make the photoshoot personal to you

I try to encourage dancers on a photoshoot to try not to copy a pose they have seen on social media. I like to work with them to create something that is crafted by them, and feels more personal. Creativity from both sides during a photoshoot is when the magic happens!

Whilst I can shape the light, advise on technique and poses, and help to push ideas, it is up to the dancer to allow themselves to be free to experiment.

be yourself!

Whether your strength is technique, or character work, or you just have a creative or editorial concept you would like to try, I love that I can create the opportunity to enable that to be captured.

Photoshoots can look wildly different depending upon the individual. Here are just a few examples of that!

Dancer in red pants elegantly balances on one foot in a dark studio, with arms extended and hair flowing, conveying grace and poise.
Person in white tank top tilts head back with mouth full of flowers, set against dark background; serene and artistic mood.
A person in chainmail holds their face dramatically, wearing white clothing against a dark background. The scene is dramatic and moody.
Person in chainmail headdress, face painted white, gazes upward in dramatic pose. Dark background enhances the moody, artistic feel.
Dancer in a flowing blue dress strikes a dramatic pose on a teal-lit stage, arms extended gracefully, conveying elegance and freedom.
Woman in a white T-shirt with colorful design looks down against a vibrant pink and green lit background, creating a moody effect.
A dancer in a beige ensemble gracefully leaps against a dark backdrop, hair flying. The outfit features intricate patterns, evoking elegance.
